How I design with AI.

I connect Claude to the tools where product work lives: Jira, Confluence, GitHub, Figma, zeroheight and the Flutter codebase. AI gathers context, drafts and documents. I frame the problem, make the decisions and approve what gets published.

The workflow

AI-assisted

Start from the product owner's input.

Claude pulls epics, stories and requirement pages from Jira and Confluence through an MCP server authenticated with my API token. Nothing is copied by hand, so nothing gets lost.

My role
Check scope, find gaps and open questions.

Connections

FigmaMCP serverReads frames, components and variables as design context.
JiraMCP · API tokenReads epics and stories; creates tickets and user stories.
ConfluenceMCP · API tokenReads requirement pages; publishes spec pages.
GitHubMCP server · local reposIssues and pull requests via MCP; code work in local clones.
FlutterSDK · app repositoryPrototypes run locally on the real codebase.
zeroheightMCP serverDesign-system rules and usage guidelines as the source of truth.

What Claude takes over

  1. Figma designread via Figma MCPJira ticketscreated via Jira MCP
  2. Design decisionsfrom the working sessionConfluence spec pagedrafted via Confluence MCP
  3. Requirementsfrom Confluence and JiraUser story draftsreviewed by me
  4. Prototype and docsfrom the working sessionGitHubcommit and pull request

Triggered by me during a working session, not scheduled in the background. Nothing is published or merged without my review.

Principles

Humans frame, AI acceleratesProblem framing and research plans stay human. AI speeds up everything around them.
Context beats promptsConnecting AI to the real sources matters more than clever wording.
Build on the real systemPrototypes on the product codebase and design guide, not disconnected mock-ups.
Least privilegeScoped API tokens, read-only where possible, kept in the MCP configuration, never in prompts or repositories.
Review before publishEvery ticket, page and commit the AI drafts is checked by me before others see it.
Transparency builds trustPeople should always understand why the AI does something, and be able to say no.

At Bosch I also built an internal AI toolkit for designers: practical prompts for research, ideation and UX writing, plus guidance on where human judgement stays essential. Bosch case study →

From thesis to practice

In 2019 my bachelor thesis described three stages of access an assistant needs to be truly useful. MCP now provides that access in a standard way.

Stage I

External access

Open, send and manage files and apps.

Today: Claude opens repos, pages and tickets.

Stage II

Internal access

Understand the content inside files and apps.

Today: Claude reads requirements, specs and the design guide.

Stage III

Full access

Process content and actively support the user.

Today: Claude drafts specs, tickets and prototypes. I decide.

How this site was built

  1. Read the old site: 10 pages, jQuery, Bootstrap 3, seven stylesheetsAI
  2. Interview on positioning, workflow and impactMe
  3. Research public figures: Bosch, Porsche, DS CoreAI
  4. Compress 163 MB of images and video to about 15 MBAI
  5. Art direction: palette, typography, references, more white spaceMe
